VGAScreen.SetPaletteEntry - error?

Feb 18, 2012 at 7:01 PM

So I have a problem again,

I have a background in my OS and if I make a new Image (e.g. satusbar).

I want to use for example black (VGAScreen.SetPaletteEntry(0, 0, 0, 0)).

Then I make a rectangle,...

And also my Background changes the color to black.

Why?

It only works if i make the statusbar in the *.cs, where also is the background.

What should I do?

Post your code, and that will reveal the error

In my Desktop.cs

//logo in the statusbar
VGAScreen.SetPaletteEntry(4, 255, 255, 255);
Core.Graphics.Logo.DrawLogo(Core.Graphics.Logo.Logosmall, 7, 5, 2, 2, 4);

In my Forms.CS

public static void DrawBlackWhite(uint[] Arr, int width, int length, uint xpixel, uint ypixel)//This function draws the Array
        {
            VGAScreen.SetPaletteEntry(0, 0, 0, 0);//black
            VGAScreen.SetPaletteEntry(1, 255, 255, 255);//white

            uint x = 0, y = 0;
            int texnumwid = 0;
            int textnumlen = 0;
            int i;
            int t;
            int count = 0;
            for (i = 0; i < length; i++)
            {
                for (t = 0; t < width; t++, count++)
                {
                    if (Arr[count] == 1)
                    {
                        VGAScreen.SetPixel320x200x8(x + (uint)t + (uint)texnumwid + (uint)xpixel, y + (uint)i + (uint)textnumlen + (uint)ypixel, 0);
                    }
                    else if (Arr[count] == 2)
                    {
                        VGAScreen.SetPixel320x200x8(x + (uint)t + (uint)texnumwid + (uint)xpixel, y + (uint)i + (uint)textnumlen + (uint)ypixel, 1);
                    }
                }
            }
        }

And the Logo becomse white, when I draw something with "DrawBlackWhite"

because palette entries are global, they have to be using the same palette overall.

Feb 18, 2012 at 8:06 PM

oh Ok thanks, so I have to make a higher index? or make all Palette entries in one cs, right?

and thanks :)

Actually here is what you should do. Make a Screen folder, then make a screen handler class and add all of your drawing functions, rectangle ect.. palette's in there and then make it static and call it from all the other classes so you don't have any problems. Kind of like what I did. Hope it helps - Matt

I still do not understand, how to do it. Help me.

how can i make this?

Mar 1, 2012 at 7:49 PM
If you make VGAScreen.SetPalletteentry(index,...);
you have to write a higher number bevause if you make (e.g.) 2 twice it will take the second.

I made a "color.cs" for that and there I have all colors, and I activate them while starting the OS so you won't have any problems :)

First you have to write:
Cosmos.Hardware.VGAScreen VGAScreen =
new Cosmos.Hardware.VGAScreen():

I don't know bur maybe it is because you don't do anything and you have to SetMode first.

Use VGAScreen.SetMode...., write that beetween SetPaletteentry and the first command.

For debugging chopse Release so it will work perfectly.

if you write VGAScreen.Clear(colorindex);
the whole screen changes the color, bit you should take a look here:
download the source and take a look it at it :)
It will help you, I'm sure.

@civilwarrock - It would be a lot nicer if you were to post code snippets instead of getting people to download your sourcecode for help. It generates a lot of false download counts for people who just want to figure out what to do instead of people who want to use your Cosmos shell (Cosmos is the operating system. You created more of an X windows system really, quite good though. I also had a look at your source, most of it is just wrappers for cosmos functions that make it look like you have coded the components yourself). Maybe even post some text for documentation pages on the mailing list. I'll commit them. Also. There is a part where you can upload patches yourself. (somewhere under the source code tab). Try that to start off with.

Yeah I should, but sometimes the code is so long I dont know if I could, but thanks for the tip. Yeah I write those because the Cosmos source works, but however you have to define a VGAScreen, which is fine but you would define it where you would do most of your drawing. Which con result in sloppy code. So I write class wrappers so I can call to it from any point of the system and quickly call to something in Cosmos, this makes my code smaller and faster. And as result I can tell my os which drivers to use and it wont effect the code, I just call one seb to change the current driver, and thats it. Otherwise if you didn't write wrappers the code to do something like that would be ten times bigger and not as simple. So the result of all this: PearOs. Thanks - Matt

Yeah I should do a few patches, I have a few for a few Cosmos drivers. Thanks

Thanks, well I am not much of a writer, I prefer to talk as I can get out what I am trying to say a lot faster and better. And we could use some updated tutorials. No one really gets into the hard stuff of how all this works, so I guess that would be my job. Plus there are a few things that I can show you guys and things I have learned about Cosmos and just really making the most out of your OS. I will start today if I can. Thanks - Matt

I know what you mean. I can express what I mean a lot faster with speech than with written words (though I personally prefer the extreme amount of control writing gives me over the ease of use speaking provides; this is mainly because I'm extremely anti-social in any setting that doesn't involve video games or programming, which, as you can probably imagine, is the large majority of places a shut-in like myself must go).

P.S. Wow, that was a bit longer than I intended.

Yeah, I was a kid before I was a programmer. And I love my programming and computer stuff, but I love talking to people. I talk to people all the time about programming

things I have learned. But one I am not is anti social. My parents made sure of that. I met a programmer in person who was ant social. He thought he was better than me, so he wouldn't talk to me and stuff like that, till I opened up some of me creations. Then he saw that I was not a stupid teenager. But he was very anti social. It took me some time before he would actually talk to me. I believe it is because us programmers figure out things others don't. And then we look at them as if they are stupid and we are smarter, and maybe we are smarter, but they aren't stupid. So I believe sometimes that can be the case. But when its programmer to programmer I never had any problems. Until I show them I know what I am talking about. Thanks - Matt. Well I am off to make my first video. Thanks

Aurora01, we haven't forgotten, but the one thing I needed was a SVGA tutorial, and you didn't have it. So I learned on my own.

Hmm, I will keep that in mind, thanks Kudzu. The only problem I ran into is I don't have a mic, which is no big deal I just use my tablet to record the audio. The only problem I ran into was syncing the two together. Because if I sync the audio with the video they don't match exactly. So now I am wondering how to do this. I could go out a get a mic but the my pc doesn't like mics. Its a server computer that been turned into a work computer. And it works great, it's just there's really no drivers for it. Let me know if you guys have any ideas. Thanks - Matt

Yeah I have a iphone. But syncing the two together is my problem. Because the length of the video and the audio are not the same and the have a second to three second offset. I can't figure out how to make the perfect with no offset without using a mic on my pc. Thanks - Matt

However I could either do podcasts. Which would be new, or I could go back to written tutorials if I needed. But written ones seem boring. But if I do that, I have to worry about someone deleting my files on my account. Because someone keeps on hacking my os stuff. However someone gave Pear free hosting so maybe I will create a folder on that and just link the two together. Hmmm that might be a good idea. In that case I should start on the Pear site. This could be a option.
